Nick Verne
I skied for the first time in seventeen years last Thursday and Friday. Just like riding a bike, I hadn't forgotten how, not that I did as well as the last time (1990). Still, this time I was more apprehensive, being forty pounds heavier. That's forty pounds more force with which to break bones. (OK, I know that's not how you measure force. It'll do.) No bones were broken, and my new look gym-bulked legs took the added strain with only a few complaints over the two days. Thredbo had some fake snow, but the real stuff hadn't been falling for five weeks and there were nasty bare patches of ground visible in the lower sections. Down by the ski rental place at the bottom it was getting really gross and muddy.

Indoor activities were fun too - we had an open bar party after the company dinner - a marketing type got very intensely in my face trying to boost me (you know, the way marketing people do in those team-building exercises) and I was very tempted to lean in and kiss him. I'm not sure how that would have gone down. Probably wouldn't have ended well.

I returned just before midnight Friday to a lonely yuriverse. We started our Saturday by taking Robert and Gary to see the Balmain almost-ours place (pending good building and pest inspections, and not too much mortgage related nonsense from the bank). It met with general approval, although I think they are a little disappointed we won't be staying closer to Darling Point. Still, the journey between them is very easy (a bus and a train).

Mum and Len will be returning from Alaska when Yuri and I are up north enjoying Turtle Cove. We went over to their place to check on plants and mail and stuff today (Sunday), only to find the dogs of the current house-minders in the yard, all plants cared for, no access to get the car out of the garage, etc. So we just walked up to Manns Point and enjoyed the view before catching a ferry back to Circular Quay, gazing at Balmain on the way past and wondering how it will really be to live there.

Best malaprop from Kath and Kim tonight (paraphrased).

Kath: You could go get a futility treatment.
Kim (glum): What's the point?
